WHEN BLUE = GREEN - MULRONEY

It was a delightful evening last night in Ottawa (version française disponible sous peu). Brian Mulroney - the only Tory leader who led a united party to two majority governments since Sir John A. Macdonald - was praised as the greenest prime minister of Canada since its foundation. Whatever you may think of him, you must let this son of la Belle province get his due.

As a matter of fact, the little guy from Baie-Comeau did a lot with respect to environment issues : he got the US on board for the Acid Rain Treaty ; he convinced the G8 to endorse the report of the Brundtland Commission and its concept of sustainable development ; he welcomed the Montreal Protocol on ozone protection ; he established the Toronto Conference on the Changing Atmosphere ; and he obtained recognition, notably from the four European powers and European Community that signed the Declaration, that "overfishing" and other harmful practices threatened living marine resources during the 1991 London Summit .

I don't know about you, but it sounds pretty green to me for such a blue Tory. No doubt : the political rehabilitation of Brian Mulroney is under way.
